Erik Satie (1866-1925) was a French composer and pianist. He was a prominent figure in the French avant-garde period of the earliest 20th century. His unique and often humorous style influenced many later 20th century artistic movements, including minimalism, repetitive music, and the Theatre of the Absurd. Maurice Hinson notes that "fun seemed to be the essence of his aesthetic". Satie's original harmonies and simple melodies represented a true break from the German Romantics, and have cemented his place as one of the most colorful figures in 20th Century music.

Notable works include:

  • Trois Gymnopedies
  • Trois Gnossiennes
  • Sports et Divertissements
